Glossary › Routing

Routing

The order of cities and dates on a tour, planned to keep drives sensible.

Routing is the order of cities and dates on a tour, and the work of planning it: keeping drives realistic, avoiding backtracking, placing days off, respecting radius clauses and hitting the right markets on the right nights.

A tour is usually routed around a few anchor dates (a festival, a big-city headline show), and the agent fills the gaps with holds.

Example

A route that goes Chicago → Detroit → Columbus → Pittsburgh flows; Chicago → Pittsburgh → Detroit → Columbus adds hundreds of miles of backtracking for the same four shows.

Tips

Check each drive's real time (not just miles), allow for time zone changes, keep overnight drives for nights with no early load-in, and run the numbers in the drive time calculator.
