Glossary › Hall fee

Hall fee

UK term for the percentage of merch sales a venue charges.

Hall fee is the UK and European term for the commission a venue charges on merchandise sold on its premises, the same idea as the US merch split. It's usually a percentage of merch sales, and some venues also charge more if their staff sell for you.

Hall fees vary widely by venue and are a frequent topic in artist campaigns, so always check the amount and what it applies to before the show.

Example

A venue's hall fee is 25% of merch sales including VAT, and the band brings its own seller. Merch takes £1,200, so the hall fee is £300 and the band keeps £900 before card fees and its own VAT obligations. (EXAMPLE numbers.)

Tips

Ask the hall fee in the advance, whether it applies to music (vinyl, CDs) as well as clothing, and whether it's calculated before or after VAT.
